What do the Chiefs Cheerleaders tell us about cheering for the Chiefs? “A lot of people ask about our tryout process to see if it is similar to what they’ve seen on TV.” Trisha explains: “I tell them it is the polar opposite. Candidates are motivated and encouraged throughout the process, regardless whether they make the team and they actually walk away with more confidence in themselves than when they first walked into the chiefs facilities. The Hunt family taught us to treat everyone with dignity and respect and that’s what you find in our youth programs, our auditions, and in the appearances we do.”
Krystal tells us why she loves being a cheerleader. “What means the most is simply touching our fan’s hearts. I love doing community appearances, and meeting fans who love the chiefs and Kansas as much as I do. I love being able to be a positive role model for the young girls in our community. Since I was at little girl I looked up to the Chiefs Cheerleaders and now here I am, living out my dream. It’s been an amazing journey.”
The most commonly asked question about being a cheerleader is, ‘What’s it like trying to work with 35 other women?’ Everyone expects to hear that squad members don’t get along, that we’re competitive, and really, they just want to hear the dirt. It simply isn’t that way. “We’re teachers, attorneys, architects, nurses, moms, students, etc. and our lives are too short to NOT get along,” tells Laura Beth. “It’s far more fun to work well as a team, laugh a lot, and not to sweat the small stuff. Being a Chiefs Cheerleader is one of the best experiences of my life and I highly recommend getting up the courage to give it a try!” Audition classes begin March 3 and Preliminary Auditions are March 24th. Twelve Chiefs Cheerleaders just returned from Mexico where they worked to promote the NFL, the Chiefs, and American football. “Tony! Ramiro! Kansas City Chiefs!” Thousands of excited fans lined up at appearances shouting questions about their favorite Chiefs player, Tony Gonzalez. Their eyes lit up with excitement as they asked about their countries newest player heading to our team, tackle Ramiro Pruneda. And the Chiefs Cheerleaders simply received rock star treatment including photo shoots, television appearances, stage performances, radio interviews, press conferences, and each cheerleader signed over 2500 autographs (now that’s a lot of signatures).
Many of the Chiefs Cheerleaders are bilingual including Jessica, who has studied the language most of her life. At each appearance, several cheerleaders addressed the crowd in their native language, which was a delight to every audience.VIDEO: El Universal Online México!
FLASH: Mexico Trip!
Chiefs Cheerleader Darcy said, “Having the opportunity to represent the Chiefs in Mexico opened my eyes to how another culture views America’s NFL. They are true fans! We were particularly impressed how passionate the wonderful people of Mexico are. They loved American football, the cheerleaders, and they obviously value things that really matter like friends and family. We were amazed how gracious and warm-hearted the people were”
The cheerleaders took time out to visit several beautiful attractions such as Temploy Mayor, which contain the remains of the Aztec civilization, the Palacio Nacional, which is the national palace where the president used to reside. Diego Rivera Murals along with artwork by Frida Kalo were displayed at the palace. Other places of interests were the El Angel de la Independencia (independence angel), the Zocalo (main square), and the park dedicated to America and all we’ve done for the Mexican people.
Back to the reason for our travels, “Futbol Americano, as they call it, is an up and coming sport,” explains Chiefs Cheerleader Amber. “We had so much fun sharing our love of America’s favorite sport with the wonderful people of Mexico. And on a personal note, we already miss the amazing staff at NFL Mexico (Geraldine, Yvette, Lidia, Diego to name a few) and our awesome body guards (Victor, Alejandro, Carlos 1 and 2!) We’ll never forget watching the Super Bowl being broadcast in Spanish, with your wonderful fans. Long live Futbol Americano in Mexico!”
From Chiefs Cheerleader Missy: “Hey Chiefs fans! How’s everyone’s off season treating them? If you’re like me, you’re ready to see the team back in action. While the players get some much needed rest and spend quality time with their families, the Chiefs Cheerleaders continue to be hard at work both in meetings at Arrowhead and throughout the community at appearances for the Chiefs. I recently traveled to Des Moines, Iowa for the John Stoddard Cancer Foundation Auction. What an amazing organization that benefits those in need of aid during cancer treatment. Their hearts are a mile wide and it is a privilege to take some of our Kansas City spirit to our neighboring state. Craig Morton, former NFL quarterback of the Broncos and Cowboys was the key note speaker at their auction. The crowd roared with excitement as he shared his memories of taking two teams to the Super Bowl! You’d all be proud of the way you, the Chiefs, and Kansas City are represented to many people near and far away. More than anything, we’re all looking forward to seeing our guys back on the field this August!”
