AUGUST 10 – 16

municipalThe Kansas City Chiefs spent the first three years of their existence known as the Dallas Texans. Founder Lamar Hunt moved his club to the Midwest for the ‘63 season and renamed it the Chiefs after Mayor H. Roe Bartle. The Chiefs played at Municipal Stadium where it shared the facility with the Kansas City Athletics from Major League Baseball.

After beginning the preseason with a matchup against the Chargers in San Diego, Kansas City was eager to play in front of its new home crowd. On the warm summer evening, Kansas City posted a 17-13 victory vs. Buffalo in front of a sparse crowd of 5,721 fans.

Kansas City got on the board quickly, as K Tommy Brooker converted a field goal on club’s first drive. RB Curtis McClinton extended the Chiefs lead to 10-0 when he raced 73 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. The Chiefs defense proved stout as they pitched a first half shutout.

Buffalo quickly took advantage of a Chiefs fumble and two defensive pass interference penalties on Kansas City. FB/K Cookie Gilchrist scored on a one-yard run, but QB/WR Ed Rutkowski missed the PAT as the Chiefs held a 10-6 lead. QB Len Dawson hit E Chris Burford for a 14-yard TD pass as Kansas City increased its lead to 17-6. Buffalo added one final touchdown in the fourth quarter, but the Chiefs held on for a 17-13 win in their Kansas City debut.
