THE MATCH-UP
The N.Y. Giants visit Arrowhead on Sunday for just the sixth time as Kansas City hosts New York for the fi rst time
since 2001. The Giants have won the last three meetings between these two infrequent interconference foes, but New York
has never claimed four consecutive victories against the Chiefs. Kansas City’s last victory vs. New York was a 20-17 OT
win at Arrowhead (9/10/95). The last time the Giants visited Arrowhead in 2001, Dick Vermeil was guiding the Chiefs
fortunes, while Jim Fassel had led New York to a berth in SB XXXV.
The Chiefs are in the midst of a four-game stretch against the NFC East and are coming off a 34-14 loss at Philadelphia (9/27). Prior to Monday Night Football, the Chiefs were one of seven teams still looking to register their initial victory of the season. Kansas City’s initial home game of the year was a narrow 13-10 loss vs. Oakland (9/20). The Chiefs have won their second game at Arrowhead in two of the past three seasons.
Meanwhile, the Giants are concluding a three-game road stretch and are attempting to become the fi rst team since the 2006 Eagles to win all three contests in a three-game road trek. New York is one of seven teams with a 3-0 record and has completed the fi rst two legs of its three-game road stretch unscathed, including a 24-0 win last week at Tampa Bay (9/27). The Giants haven’t started 4-0 in back-to-back seasons since doing it in ‘89-90 under head coach Bill Parcells. New York’s ‘90 squad started the year 10-0 en route to a victory in Super Bowl XXV.
Chiefs head coach Todd Haley served as an assistant coach with Parcells with both the N.Y. Jets (’97-99) and Dallas (2004-06). During Haley’s tenure with the Cowboys, he faced Tom Coughlin’s Giants six times, registering a 23- 20 win in his most recent encounter at Giants Stadium (12/3/06). However, the Giants did register a 37-29 win last season at Arizona (11/23/08) when Haley was serving as the offensive coordinator of a Cardinals squad that advanced to Super Bowl XLIII. Coughlin is 6-2 vs. Kansas City as an NFL head coach (1-0 w/NYG, 3-1 w/JAX), including a 1-0 mark at Arrowhead.
Next week, Kansas City faces its third consecutive NFC East opponent when the club hosts Dallas (10/11) for Alumni Weekend. Up next for the Giants is a home date vs. Oakland (10/11).
THE SERIES
Kansas City holds a 2-9 (.182) record against the N.Y. Giants in regular season play. The Chiefs own a 2-3 record vs.
the Giants at Arrowhead, but are 0-6 at Giants Stadium. New York has won three straight contests vs. Kansas City, but
has never won four in a row against the Chiefs. New York’s two previous three-game winning streaks against the Chiefs
were snapped with KC victories at Arrowhead in ‘83 and ‘95. KC suffered a 27-17 loss at the Meadowlands (12/17/05) in
the most recent meeting betwen the two clubs as Giants RB Tiki Barber set a single-game team record with 220 rushing
yards.
The Giants received a standing ovation when they were introduced on their most recent trip to Arrowhead, a contest that marked the NFL’s return to play following the tragic events of September 11th. The Giants won that contest by a 13-3 count (9/23/01). Kansas City’s most recent victory against the Giants was a 20-17 overtime thriller at Arrowhead (9/10/95).
