THE MATCH-UPKansas City will visit San Diego on Sunday for the 100th installment of the Chiefs-Chargers all-time series that dates back to the American Football League’s inaugural season. The Chiefs are seeking to construct their first threegame winning streak since 2006. Kansas City is also attempting to register its third road victory of the season, a feat the club most recently accomplished in 2006. Two of KC’s three wins have been decided by seven points or less.
The Chiefs are coming off a huge 27-24 OT home win vs. Pittsburgh (11/22). RB Jamaal Charles returned the opening kickoff for a 97-yard TD in that contest, while LB Andy Studebaker had a pair of INTs in his initial NFL start. WR Chris Chambers had four catches for 119 yards against the Steelers, and has caught 10 passes for 249 yards with two TDs since coming to KC off waivers from SD. QB Matt Cassel had two TDs and a 100.4 rating in his fi rst Arrowhead win.
San Diego is in the midst of a five-game winning streak that began with a 37- 7 victory at Arrowhead (10/25). The Chargers are currently atop the AFC West standings with a 7-3 record after a commanding 32-3 win at Denver (11/22). The Chiefs are attempting to even their division record at 2-2 with a pair of contests vs. Denver still remaining after Sunday’s clash with San Diego. San Diego is 4-1 in division play and will round out its AFC West slate against the Chiefs. Kansas City has won four of its last five visits to the state of California, including a 16-10 victory at Oakland (11/15) on its most recent road trip.
Kansas City is 2-1 in its last three road games, all of which have been decided by eight points or less. Over that three-game span on the road, the Chiefs have outscored their foes by a 51-40 margin and are +2 (5 takes/3 gives) in the turnover column. In a 14-6 win at Washington (10/18) and a 16-10 victory at Oakland (11/15), KC’s defense allowed those clubs to convert just 13.3% (4 of 30) of their third-down opportunities. K Ryan Succop has hit on nine of 11 FGs in his last three road contests. He also connected on the first gamewinning FG of his career vs. Pittsburgh (11/22), a 22-yard effort.
The Chiefs will enjoy a three-game home stretch after facing the Chargers, beginning with a contest vs. Denver (12/6). Up next for San Diego is a road contest at Cleveland (12/6).
THE SERIES
Kansas City holds a 50-48-1 (.510) all-time advantage over San Diego in regular and postseason play. All 50 of those
victories against San Diego have come in regular season play. Kansas City is seeking to secure its 51st victory against
the Chargers. The only teams the Chiefs have defeated more frequently in the regular season are Denver (53) and Oakland
(51).
San Diego owns a four-game win streak in the series, including a 37-7 win at Arrowhead (10/25). The Chargers are seeking to win five in a row against the Chiefs for the first time since ‘87-89. In 2008, the Chargers claimed a pair of one-point victories over the Chiefs, including a 20-19 decision at Qualcomm Stadium (11/9/08). Kansas City’s most recent victory in the series was a 30-16 decision at San Diego (9/30/07).
The home team has won 18 of the last 27 games in this series dating back to ‘96. Kansas City owns a 5-9 (.357) record at San Diego, dating back to ‘95. Chiefs-Chargers matchups are traditionally closely-contested battles. Excluding one tie between the two teams, a total of 12 games in this series have been decided by exactly one point, including two of the last three meetings. Those 12 one-point games are the most of any series in the league since ‘60.
The initial meeting between these two squads was the fi rst regular season game in the history of both franchises when the Dallas Texans lost a 21-20 decision to the L.A. Chargers at the L.A. Coliseum (9/10/60).
The Chiefs and Chargers have met just one time in postseason play. San Diego claimed a win in the lone playoff tilt between the two clubs, registering a 17-0 victory in a ‘92 AFC Wild Card Playoff Game at San Diego (1/2/93).
