Dec 20, 2009, 4:50:36 PMCharles in Charge: RB Jamaal Charles registered a career-high 154 rushing yards, his second consecutive 100-yard rushing performance. Charles now has three 100-yard games on the season and four for his career. Charles has scored a TD in six consecutive games. His 47-yard rushing TD was his fifth rushing TD of the season. Charles is the second player in team history with three rushing TDs of 40+ yards in a season, joining RB Larry Johnson (2006, 2008). He has 297 rushing yards in his last two contests. Charles established a career high with 27 attempts from scrimmage.
Cassel’s Day: QB Matt Cassel registered his first 300-yard passing game as a member of the Chiefs, throwing for 331 yards, his highest total since a 345-yard performance vs. Arizona (12/21/08) as a member of the Patriots. He threw two TDs, marking his sixth multi-TD game of the season and the 12th of his career. Cassel now has 15 TD passes on the year and 38 for his career. Cassel has thrown nine TDs in the fourth quarter this season.
Pass Defense: The Chiefs allowed 66 net passing yards, the fewest permitted by the Chiefs since allowing 55 net passing yards vs. Oakland (9/14/08). Kansas City has allowed a combined 139 net passing yards in its last two contests, the club’s lowest two-game total since allowing 92 net passing yards at Jacksonville (9/13/98) and vs. San Diego (9/20/98).
First-Half Scoring, Other Offensive Notes: Kansas City’s 24 points in the first half were the club’s most since posting 24 vs. Miami (12/21/08). Kansas City produced a season-high 491 yards of total offense, the club’s best total since registering 492 vs. Miami (12/21/08). Kansas City’s 323 net passing yards were the club’s most since 344 producing at Detroit (12/2307). The Chiefs produced 22 first downs, the club’s second-highest tally of the season.
Chambers’ Day: WR Chris Chambers finished the game with 114 receiving yards, his second 100-yard game of the season and the 19th of his career. He caught a nine-yard TD pass from QB Matt Cassel, his fourth TD with the Chiefs and the 57th of his career.
More Notes on KC’s Receivers: TE Brad Cottam tied a career high with four catches and had a career-best 62 receiving yards. WR Mark Bradley caught a 12-yard TD, his second scoring grab of the season and the ninth of his career. Bradley established career highs with seven kickoff returns and 123 kickoff return yards.
Takeaway Stats: The Chiefs have registered nine takeaways in their last three games. CB Brandon Carr registered his first INT of the season and the third of his career. DE Andy Studebaker recovered a fumbled punt snap in the end zone for his first career TD. It marked the first fumble return TD for the Chiefs since CB Maurice Leggett returned a fumbled fake FG attempt for a 67-yard TD at Oakland (11/30/08). CB Brandon Flowers registered his fourth INT of the season and the sixth of his career.
Succop Matches Stenerud: K Ryan Succop made FGs of 30 and 27 yards, giving him 21 made FGs on the season, tying Hall of Fame K Jan Stenerud for the highest total by a rookie in Chiefs history.
Bowe’s Streak Resumes: WR Dwayne Bowe has caught a pass in 33 consecutive games dating back to a contest vs. Denver (11/11/07), the longest active receiving streak of any Chiefs player.
Starting/Playing Streaks & Notes: G Brian Waters was inactive with an injury, snapping a string of 51 consecutive starts dating to a game vs. Denver (11/23/06). DE Alex Magee and T Barry Richardson both made their initial NFL starts.
Original Arrowhead Pressbox Finale: Sunday’s game marked the 386th and final contest viewed from the original Arrowhead pressbox. Over the last 38 seasons, 88 preseason, 293 regular season and five playoff games have been viewed from this location. The pressbox will move to a new location in 2010 as part of the $325 million renovation to Arrowhead.
